More WordPress Tips

A couple of weeks ago I wrote a post about getting started with WordPress.com. As a follow on, I thought I’d write a bit about what you should include in your blog plus categorising posts and tagging them.

If your blog is an addition to your main business site (rather than a standalone blog), then make sure you link to your main site and make the link prominent. You want visitors to your blog to be able to easily find your main site. Don’t forget to link to your blog from your main site too.

Include an About page – who you are and what you do, no matter what your blog is about as people are often interested in who’s behind the blog. You can create as many ‘static’ pages as you want with WordPress so if you provide a few services, you could create pages for each one too.

When it comes to your blog posts it’s a good idea to categorise them, so if you provide different services, they would make good blog post categories, the same with products. When you write a new post, make sure you allocate it to an appropriate category. You can create many categories, and categorising posts makes it easier for visitors to find what they want.

You can also ‘tag’ posts with keywords. This is different from categorising posts and is there to make it easy for visitors to find posts relating to their own keywords if they perform a search on your blog. You’ll need to add a search box to your blog for this which you’ll find in your ‘widgets’ (in the ‘appearance’ section). I’ve previously written about tagging which you can read here.

The best thing when getting to grips with blogging is to dive in and start experimenting. Try different things out, you can’t go far wrong with it and you never know, you may start to enjoy it!
