A busy time for Twitter!

This social networking, micro-blogging tool has been in the news quite a lot lately!  Already very popular in the US, it would seem it’s now being adopted by more and more people in the UK – and not just by celebrities either.  High profile Twitterers like @StephenFry (interviewed here outside the BBC studios) talking to @Wossy (on his Friday night show below) can only help its astronomic growth, although sceptics continue to ask “What is the point of Twitter?”

Articles in The Times and much reporting in the technology blog on the BBC explain the recent rise to prominence.

Twitter beat traditional media to a breaking story when the US plane landed in the Hudson River.  Janis Krums was a passenger on one of the ferries involved in the rescue.  He snapped a picture on his iPhone, sent it to TwitPic, posted a quick tweet and forgot about it as the ferry reached the plane.  His photo was one of the first images to be posted and be shared around the world within minutes.

pick up the people. Crazy.”  Janis Krums

This article in the Telegraph examines the latest figures from the Hitwise newsletter.

It can’t be denied that Twitter is building a head of steam, the real question is, where is it going?
