Spring Clean Your Online Presence!

More and more people join the online party every day, and I love meeting new people! But I don’t ‘connect’ with just anyone, oh no. First, I like to find out a little about them. So I visit their different profiles, have a look at their website, read a blog post or two. Yes it is time-consuming, but I think it’s polite to take an interest.

Here are a few things I’ve seen:

1. Just because you can automate updates doesn’t mean you have to broadcast 10 or 20 times every hour of the day. I’ve noticed a recent trend of people simply retweeting automatically from newstreams – that’s just being lazy.

2. On the other end of the scale so many blogs are like ghost towns, with the last entry in 2009 (sometimes even earlier!). If you’ve lost interest or don’t want to continue with a blog, then don’t link to it from your social network profiles.

3. While I’m on the subject of links from profiles, please don’t take me straight to your sign-up page. Be patient, let’s connect first, give me a chance to get to know a little about you, before we take our relationship to the next step.

If you want to get the best return from your online presence, take a look at each of your sites and all the networks you belong to. Dust them off, bring them up to date and make them sparkle again!
